Sophie Cooley Pearson collection, 1843-1975.

The collection includes items related to the history of steamboats on the lower Mississippi River and on other Louisiana rivers. Numerous prints including lithographs, paintings, drawings, and photographs such as tintypes, calotypes, positive prints and negatives depict steamboat transportation of passengers and cargo, notably cotton, and ports on the Mississippi including New Orleans and Vicksburg. Some photographs depict L. V. Cooley and members of his family. A speech by L. V. Cooley entitled, "River transportation and its relation to New Orleans," is included. Manuscript volumes include two logbooks from the steamboat Ouachita (1931-1932); three scrapbooks containing photographs, clippings, and printed and manuscript items pertaining to steamboats in the 19th and early 20th centuries; and two volumes of memoirs of Sophie Cooley Pearson and Esther Cooley which relate to the career of Captain L. V. Cooley, the operation of steamboats, steamboat history, and the family's life aboard the steamboats America and Ouachita. Printed items include pamphlets, brochures, post cards, broadsides, and articles related to steamboat operation and history. Monographs include PROPELLING AND CARGO CARRYING EQUIPMENT ON THE MISSISSIPPI AND WARRIOR RIVER SYSTEMS AND ON THE GULF INTERCOASTAL WATERWAYS (1942) and PANAMA CANAL TOLLS AND INTERCOASTAL SHIPPING (1943) by H. B. Cooley, and two editions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers FLOOD CONTROL AND NAVIGATION MAPS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, CAIRO, ILLINOIS, TO THE GULF OF MEXICO. Artifacts in the collection include a water cooler, tray, and bronze plaque from the steamboat America, a tray from the steamer J. M. White, and china cups.

Sophie Cooley Pearson, a resident of Westwego, Louisiana, was the daughter of steamboat captain L. V. Cooley (d. 1931). L. V. Cooley, the son of a river boat captain, piloted the steamboats America and Ouachita on the Mississippi River. His daughter, Esther Cooley, published the monograph COME ABOARD THE STEAMER AMERICA: THE LAST COTTON PACKET BOAT ON THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI, 1898-1926, and his brother, Stoughton Cooley, published the monograph THE CAPTAIN OF THE AMARYLLIS (1910).
